Tree Guide: Noble Fir

The Noble Fir (Latin: Abies Procera) is a distinguished and elegant Christmas tree that has become the variety of choice for households seeking something special for the festive season. Native to the Pacific Northwest of the United States, particularly the mountainous regions of Washington and Oregon, this tree brings a touch of American grandeur to homes across Britain. Renowned for its tall stature in the wild and fine qualities as a Christmas tree, the Noble Fir certainly lives up to its name.

Characteristics

In its natural habitat, the Noble Fir can reach impressive heights of up to 90 meters, making it the tallest of all fir species. When cultivated as a Christmas tree, it showcases a beautifully symmetrical shape with strong, evenly spaced branches – ideal for displaying hanging decorations (and more ‘gaps’ compared to the Nordman). The needles are a striking silvery-blue to bluish-green, offering a unique appearance that stands out amongst other varieties. Measuring about 2–3 cm in length, the needles are soft to the touch, making it a safe choice for families with young children and pets.

The Noble Fir has a pleasant, mild fragrance that adds a festive aroma to your home without being overpowering – kinda woody and citrussy, some might compare it to Yuzu. Its waxy needles also give it a bit of a glossy finish, and we all love a bit of gloss and glam around Christmas, eh?

Christmas Tree Credentials

The Noble Fir is prized for a few key qualities:

  • Excellent needle retention – even in indoor environments the Noble Fir should retain its needles well through the season.
  • Strong branches – sturdy enough to hold heavy ornaments, allowing for creative and lavish decorating.
  • Tinge of colour – the silvery-blue needles make for a different look.
  • Soft needles – gentle to the touch.
  • Mild fragrance – unlike the Nordman, the Noble does have a hint of a scent
Farmer Tom Says
I like to say the Noble Fir is a 'regal' tree - majestic, proud, strong and beautiful. They're hard to come by in the UK, so we're happy to be able to offer them!

Companies and growers measure Christmas trees in lots of ways, so on our website we’ve tried to keep it relatively simple: our measurements in feet are a minimum height to the top of the tree. So, if you order a 6ft tree it will be at least 6ft from the base of the trunk to the tippy top – typically, it will be a bit taller. Don’t forget to account for this potential extra height – sometimes up to 1.5ft for taller trees.

The long bit on the top of the tree (where you put your star or fairy) is called the ‘leader’. This can be quite long on some trees and much shorter on others – just natural variance – so growers account for this when measuring by taking a height to halfway up the leader (halfway between the top set of branches and the top of the tree). Just to confuse things a bit further, the industry standard is centimetre ranges. Here’s a handy conversion:

Tree ordered - Height to halfway up leader:

4ft tree - 125-150cm

5ft tree - 150-175cm

6ft tree - 175-200cm

7ft tree - 200-225cm

8ft tree - 225-250cm

9ft tree - 250-300cm

With natural products it’s not a perfect science, so these ranges act as a guide and your tree may be a little outside of the ranges in either direction.

Stand

If you’re putting your tree in any sort of stand, that will add some height to the tree, so don’t forget to factor it in to the overall measurement! If you need a stand, we sell them here.

Tree width

Bear in mind that the taller your tree, the wider it will be at the base. Nordman Firs and Norway Spruces in particular get quite big and bushy as they get taller, so make sure you’ve got space!
